Oh. Didn’t realize there was a monolithic singular Asian culture and identity.
Thanks for the info. Now, where do I learn about this pure Asian identity that I keep hearing about?
Nabibili sa Divisoria, five gives.

Civilizing the civilized

Frankly, I have always wondered why, at the turn of the XXth century, we were portrayed in leading American magazines as fierce little black pygmies cuddled by a benevolent Uncle Sam. The captions of such degrading images always alluded to America’s divine mission of Christianizing and civilizing us.
Didn’t the USA know we were already Catholics? Hadn’t they heard of Jose Rizal and Marcelo del Pilar, of Leona Florentino, Andres Bonifacio, Emilio Jacinto, and Apolinario Mabini ? I am aghast at how long it has taken me to discover what must have been so glaringly simple to may grandparents.
Most of us are not aware that although short-lived the First Republic and the Malolos Constitution set the stage for a national educational system that was secular, scientific, patriotic and democratic. Operating even in conditions of war, the First Republic decreed free and compulsory elementary education, reformed higher education and opened the Universidad Literaria de Filipinas in Oct 1898. Law, medicine, pharmacy, and significantly, “Historia Critica de Filipinas” were taught together with other disciplines that included foreign languages. It was supposed to be a state university with the noble vision of challenging Filipino youth to create “a free country”.
So precious was education that other centers of study blossomed all over the country. Aside from Gen.Antonio Luna’s military academy, the Escuela de Derecho, founded by no less than Felipe Calderon, became the first law school outside the
University of Santo Tomas. Noted intellectuals like Rafael Palma and Juan Sumulong taught civil and constitutional law, comparative legislation and other
subjects like sociology, political economy, and statistics. Textbooks were published, notably the “Lecciones de Derecho Civil Filipino” authored by F.
Calderon who also wrote “ El ABC del Ciudadano Filipino”, a Q & A manual about civic rights and duties, translated in various vernacular languages.
How I wish they had taught me in school that in the post-Spanish colonial, post-revolutionary period, this Republic was in ferment. The Instituto Rizal produced a Teodoro Kalaw. The Instituto de Mujeres opened in 1900, in the same year as Liceo de Manila where Rizal’s sisters, Trinidad, Narcisa, Saturnina and Josefa, were enrolled. Liceo de Manila and Colegio Filipino (1901) offered non-sectarian, co-educational, scientific instruction.
Significantly, there were no religious images in any of these schools, only political posters that caricatured the Americans whose foreboding presence grew more disturbing. The educational policy was to instill “nacionalismo” and awaken in the students a desire to continue defending “Patria Filipinas”.
- it’s probably because America does not regard Spain as capable of “civilizing” lol and we were sold off at a rather (may i?) low sum, you know, LOW LOW LOW sum to be considered as “civilized.” at the back of their minds, they’re buying an island with brown monkeys. but i’m just being sarcastic, no truth there.
A recent study claims that being a night owl is an evolutionary advancement that marks out “more intelligent individuals,” whereas “those with lower IQs tend to restrict their activities primarily to daytime. Basically, smart people have evolved to stay up later.
This puts a whole new spin on things. The early bird gets the worm? Forget it.
But as with many things, there’s a catch. Night people may be smarter, but they’re also less reliable and more likely to suffer from addictions and eating disorders.
You just can’t win.
Here’s a test you can take to determine whether you’re a morning or night person.
i deny, i’m not addicted to anything!
MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Tourism (DOT) said Wednesday that its new “Pilipinas kay Ganda” slogan is only a concept and it is not yet final.
Consultations have yet to be done before a decision is made if it will be used, DOT Secretary Alberto Lim said.
He added that the slogan was presented on Monday as a soft launch for the DOT to see how the public would react to the new brand.
Lim explained that it can be changed anytime if a better slogan comes up. He said he expected criticisms after the concept was made known to the public.
The DOT has taken down the website featuring the new slogan after finding out that a porn site uses the same keywords.
“We are open to suggestions. We are waiting for a better idea na kailangan ma-capture yun essence na what makes the Philippines a good and attractive tourist destination,” Lim said.
He also defended the DOT’s decision to change the branding from “WOW Philippines,” as this has reportedly lost momentum after it was not used extensively by the Arroyo administration.
“We need to launch a new brand, kasabay ng bagong administrasyon. It is important to create a new buzz,” Lim said.
Lim does not believe that using the Filipino language for the brand name would make it difficult for foreigners to understand the theme.
He said since the language is Filipino, it would be more interesting for foreigners to take a second look because they would be curious as to what it means. A translation will be placed under the brand, he added.
“They will be interested kasi may foreign sounding word, what are they trying to tell me?” Lim said.
Tourism officials have been thinking of a new slogan since July and they came up with “Pilipinas Gay Ganda,” saying “Kay Ganda” is the best adjective that can be used to describe how beautiful the Philippines is.
Lim admitted, however, that using the Filipino language is risky especially at a time when most countries are using the English language to make ideas easier to understand.
“It is risky but I’d rather take the risk if we want to get ahead. We need an edge dahil maliit lang ang budget natin compared to other countries like Thailand and Malaysia.” Lim said.
The DOT will still consult with focus groups to see how foreigners would react to the new brand name. Their opinion, he said, has more weight than what other Filipinos think because they are the target market.
He added, however, critics’ opinion will also be considered.
It may take a month or two before the tourism department decides whether it will go with the new branding or change it anew.
On the other hand, ordinary Filipinos have different opinions on the new branding.
Some are in favor, saying it might help attract more tourists.
Others do not agree, as they consider “WOW Philippines” as easier to understand for both foreigners and locals.
Concept my ass, if I know any better that was the best you could offer. You don’t do an opening to anything, grand or soft, if the idea is still sloppy, jeez. Case in point, the lack of time to even google that Pilipinas kay ganda can only be appreciated by foreigners of questionable intentions.
Dear Noynoy, only Justice De Lima from DOJ is the only one working and tax worth-it, the rest are buffoons! I suggest you start cutting heads, starting from the people who are in charge of your image and the country’s, or suffer being unpopular as Obama in the next months.
The one I am more appalled is the second statement I emboldened here in the article. Seriously Lim? Seriously? That’s the best excuse you can come up with?
Look Mr. Lim, look how different countries marketed themselves, notice anything consistent with them?

Amazing ThailandWe’re not France damn it! This is not the time to be haughty as the French, we have no museums similar to Louvre or wines or epic battles throughout centuries. Our language is not exactly something people study abroad out of non-academic interests. We do not exactly have a monopoly on having natural beauty or exotic practices. Simply put, you’re not being witty with that slogan, you’re just being lazy and incompetent.
DOT. one more letter, an S (and no let’s not think of the word “simply”), would make it the philippine anti-tuberculosis program aka TB DOTS Program (link). i’m not kidding. it was the first thing that came to mind when i first read DOT (“i think it’s missing a letter…oh fuck. it’s our tourism campaign?”).
huhuhu, that means, we really are the sick man of asia, huhuhu.
don’t mind me, i’m just sleepy. zzz.
